Veteran Indian film actor Shammi Kapoor, 79, passed away Sunday morning due to chronic renal failure. Born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor; he was a prominent Indian film actor and director of Hindi cinema from the late 1950s until the early 1970s.


He debuted on silver screen in 1953 with the film Jeevan Jyoti, and delivered many hit films like Bramhachari, Teesri Manzil, Junglee, Professor, Dil Deke Dekho, Rajkumar, Kashmir Ki Kali, Tumsa Nahin Dekha,  Dil Tera Diwana, China Town, Janwar,  An Evening in Paris, Andaz and Vidhaata. He got the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in Brahmachari and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Vidhaata in 1982.











Indian President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh expressed grief and condolences over the death of veteran Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor.

In her condolence message, the President of India said, “Shri Kapoor was one of the veteran actors, who adorned Hindi cinema. He delighted Hindi Cinema fans with his vivacious acting. He shall always be remembered by a generation of film watchers. His acting was best exemplified through the popular songs in the movies Junglee, Rajkumar, Teesri Manzil, Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Kashmir Ki Kali, Brahmachari, Vidhata and others. In his death, the film industry has lost a creative talent” she said.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, expressing grief said that, "I am sad to learn of Shri Shammi Kapoor`s demise. He was an accomplished actor who entertained millions and millions of fans in India and abroad. I share his family`s grief."
