CHENNAI (NNN-PTI): After complaining to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes about being harassed on caste grounds, Justice C S Karnan of the Madras High Court has claimed that some former judges had also faced a similar ordeal.

"Since April 2009 I faced harassment but remained silent to maintain the decorum of the court. I am a self respecting person," he told reporters in his chamber Thursday.

He said there was no need for him to complain to the Chief Justice of the high court as the Commission, functioning directly under the President, had been set up to look into problems faced by the SCs and STs.

"It is only the Commission which will give me protection so I approached it," he said, adding that the commission was an independent body and a competent authority and its chairman the proper person to address his grievance.

Declining to name the judges mentioned in his complaint to the Commission, Justice Karnan said "wait for sometime".

He said he would reveal the names during the inquiry. He, however, said not all judges had harassed him. Justice Karnan claimed he had circumstantial material, documents and eyewitnesses to support his complaint.

Noting that he held a constitutional office and had therefore approached the Commission, he said its chairman had informed the Chief Justice of India, who had granted permission to the Commission to hold an inquiry into his complaint. -NNN-PTI
