MUMBAI, India (NNN-Bernama) -- India's anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has been selected as the most popular contemporary leader in a spot ballot held in the country's commercial capital Mumbai.

The voting, which was open for all, was held at the Gateway of India on Thursday evening, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Hazare was given the title 'Hero of Mumbai' after the voting exercise, known as 'Mumbai Ka Hero Kaun', conducted by the Mumbai unit of India Against Corruption (IAC).

A total of 5,181 votes were cast during three hours, IAC media coordinator Piyush Bhatia said.

The voters had the option of choosing Indian leaders like Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani besides the 74-year-old Gandhian.

However, none of them came close to Hazare, who attracted an impressive 4,241 votes, he added. -- NNN-BERNAMA
