DUBAI (NNN-Bernama) --Worried over the rising number of suicides among expatriates, Indian community leaders in Bahrain are calling for urgent steps to curb the problem by offering counselling and support services.
Community members at a gathering to discuss the issue said the phenomenon should be ‘a matter of concern’ that warranted immediate intervention, PTI quoted a report in the local media.
According to the report, as many as seven Indians had committed suicide inBahrain over the last few weeks.
Sovichen Chennattusserry, who organised the gathering, said all seven persons 'had left behind broken, shattered families' and called for community leaders and the media to lend their support.
Salmaniya Medical Complex Accident and Emergency department chief resident, P V Cheriyan, said although the number of deaths resulting from suicides was 'small', the number of suicide attempts had been increasing.
"We get scores of cases from all sections, including teenagers, who have attempted suicide. We deal with these cases according to a set protocol," he said.
Suggestions made by community leaders at the gathering included regular visits to labour camps to create awareness among people on ways of dealing with stress, which is blamed for the suicides.
Cheriyan said financial problems, chronic illness and people's inability to deal with these issues 'often resulted in suicidal tendencies.'
Babu Ramachandran, a senior physician at the local American Mission Hospital , said there should be a help-line available to counsel people individually and awareness should be created via the media and in schools.
Veteran community leader Vani Krishnan said she believed extra-marital affairs were a leading cause of stress which ultimately led to people committing suicide.
"These people are unable to deal with the guilt and take the extreme step of ending their life," she said.
A volunteer organisation called An Art of Living has offered to provide counselling and follow-up services to vulnerable groups. – NNN-BERNAMA
