BHOPAL, India (NNN-UNI) -- Union Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram today welcomed Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's proposal to combat the insurgency menace in the state.

During his meeting with the visiting politician, Mr Chouhan proposed making some presentations to tackle left-wing extremism.

Accepting his proposal, Mr Chidambaram invited the Chief Minister to New Delhi to discuss the issue and chalk out a strategy in this regard.

Briefing media, Mr Chidambaram said although Madhya Pradesh is less affected by Naxalism, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has spread its tentacles in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, southern Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, three districts of West Bengal and one district in Maharashtra.

"The Centre is effectively combating left-wing extremism in tandem with state governments and a special effort is underway to stop terrorist activities and infiltration in the northeast," he said.

Stressing the need for strengthening the police force, Mr Chidambaram said 700 to 800 Indian Police Service officers would be recruited soon while security forces such as the Border Security Force and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police would also be strengthened further. --NNN-UNI
