NAIROBI (NNN-KBC) -- Dutch multinational Philips Electronics is partnering the Kenyan government to light up streets and roads in the country using LED lighting powered by solar panels.
Philips Lighting Africa General Manager Andre Dehmel said here Friday the lighting will help the country save on energy which can be channelled to other uses.
About 80 per cent of Kenyans are not connected to the national power grid mainly because of low electricity generation and the limited coverage of the transmission lines.
However, Philips Electronics, together with the government and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will light up Kenyan urban centres and roads using light-emitting diode (LED) lighting powered by solar panels.
Dehmel said that apart from lighting from a renewable source, power from the solar panels could be transmitted to the national grid to be rechannelled to other uses. This would help Kenya increase electricity penetration to the rural area.
The project also aims to help Kenya earn carbon credits and increasing energy security. -NNN-KBC
