NEW DELHI, India (NNN-Bernama)-- The Women and Child Development Ministry said child marriages are prevalent in the country but often go unregistered, Press Trust of India reported.
Minister Krishna Tirath said according to the National Crime Records Bureau, only about 60 incidents of child marriages were registered in 2010 and 113 in 2011.
An annual health survey for 2007-09 found child marriages below the legal age of 18 in the following states: Assam (10.2 per cent), Bihar (20.2), Chhattisgarh (6), Jharkhand (17.6), Madhya Pradesh (12.5), Odisha (5.9), Rajasthan (21.9), Uttar Pradesh (8.9) and Uttarakhand (3).
Tirath said that except Jammu and Kashmir, all states have set up a Child Welfare Committee. --NNN-BERNAMA
