NEW DELHI, India (NNN-Xinhua) -- Indian Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away at a hospital in the southern city of Chennai Tuesday, said sources at hospital.
Deshmukh, who was twice the chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra, died around 1:40 p.m., said the Global Hospital, where he was awaiting liver transplant.
He was 67 and is survived by wife and three sons, including Bollywood actor Ritesh.
"He was suffering from liver cancer after developing cirrhosis of the liver a year back. He was flown to Chennai last week for the transplant from a hospital in Mumbai," the sources said.
His body will be flown to his home town of Latur for final rites.
Indian Parliament was adjourned after news of his death broke. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, among many others, expressed their condolences over Deshmukh's demise.--NNN-XINHUA
