NEW DELHI, (NNN-Xinhua) -- Muslim protesters pelted stones and footwear at the U.S. consulate in Chennai, southern India, on Friday to protest a desecrating short movie on Prophet Mohammed released recently in the U.S. by a Jewish man, said local media.

Window panes of the inquiry counter and a police booth near the entrance of the consulate were damaged. Police resorted to lathi- charge to disperse the protesters. Twenty-five people suffered minor injuries, said local daily Times of India.

Protests were also held in Indian-controlled Kashmir against the movie, which triggered violent attacks upon U.S. missions in the Middle East resulting in the death of U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

India is likely to ban on Internet the movie and has heightened security at U.S. missions in the country including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. -- NNN-XINHUA
