NEW DELHI, India (NNN-UNI) -- Concerned over the July 30-31 power grid failure which plunged almost half of India's population into darkness at noon, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been taking particular interest to ensure that such a situation does not recur, sources said here today.
The Prime Minister, who held a meeting with newly-appointed Power Minister M Veerappa Moily, sought a detailed report on the power situation in the country and the steps taken to prevent outages like the one that happened last month-end.
The meeting took place last evening after Mr Moily had met Chief Ministers and Power Ministers from eight affected states and a union territory.
Mr Moily briefed the Prime Minister about the action plan to avert such outages in future.
The sources said Mr Moily had also briefed the Prime Minister on the measures agreed to at the meeting with the Chief Ministers and Power Ministers and said a new plan called 'islanding' would help in supply of power to essential and emergency services in the event of any breakdown. -- NNN-UNI
