Madrid– A trophy of internationally renowned Iranian poet, mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, literary figure, and physician Hakim Omar Khayyam was unveiled at Madrid’s Complutense University, Wednesday.
According to IRNA, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador to Spain Morteza Saffari at the ceremony held in the presence of the head of the Culture and Islamic Communications Organization (CICO) Mohammad-Baqer Khorramshad, a large number of professors and Iranologists, students of Persian language and literature, and Iranians residing, or living in Spain, expressed the putting up of Khayyam’s trophy at that university as a beautiful cultural move, adding, “Khayyam must be appreciated for his contributions to the mankind.”
Referring to the allocation of an international day to Khayyam by UNESCO, he said, “Hakim Omar Khayyam is known in Europe for his love quartets, but he was meanwhile a great scientist, Gnostic, and mathematician.”
Saffari pointed out that some 21 pamphlets are left from Khayyam, 50% of which is on trigonometry and arithmetic, adding, “One of Khayyam’s works is designing the solar calendar, which is still used after the passage of one thousand years, thanks to its astonishing accuracy.”
He emphasized the need for commemorating Khayyam, expressing hope that such moves would lead to the broadening of cultural tie and cooperation between Iran and Spain, and the Spanish citizens too would visit Iran and their officials would put up trophies of their scientists in Iranian cities.
Saffari said that the Iranians are very fund of Spain and the Spanish culture, and that the works of great Spanish literary figures are translated into Persian language and widely ready by the Iranians.
After his remarks, the trophy of Hakim Omar Khayyam which was brought to Madrid on Wednesday morning was unveiled by the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the head of CICO.
After the ceremony Khorrmashad had a meeting with 15 Spanish professors and Iranologists and exchanged viewpoints with them on expansion of the Persian language learning in Spain and the moves that need to be made in that respect. IRNA
