Afghan President Hamid Karzai says 31 U.S. troops and 7 Afghan soldiers have been killed in a helicopter crash in eastern Wardak province.

Officials say Saturday's crash represents the biggest death toll in a single incident for international forces in Afghanistan since the start of the war in 2001.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft and says 8 of its fighters were killed in the exchange.

NATO had confirmed the crash earlier, but had given no details about casualties.

President Karzai has expressed his condolences to U.S. President Barack Obama and to the families of
the victims.(VOA News)
