CHINA PLEDGES MORE EFFORTS TO PROMOTE INT'L LAW IN ASIA

  

BEIJING (NNN-Bernama) -- State Councilor Dai Bingguo said Saturday that China was ready to work with other Asian countries for the development of international law in Asia, reports Xinhua news agency. 

Dai made the remarks when addressing an opening ceremony of a conference of the Asian Society of International Law. 

He said peace, development and cooperation had become the irreversible trend of the times, and under such circumstances, international law had "room to thrive and a bigger role to play." 

"Though countries emphasize the importance of international law in the maintenance of world peace, violations of all kinds are still happening each day," Dai noted. 

"As China pursues peaceful development, it has, at the same time, embarked on a journey of solidarity with other Asian countries," he said. 

Dai said China's peaceful development will also in turn promote the positive development of international law, noting that China advocated upholding the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. 

The two-day conference is the third of this kind since the society was launched in Singapore in 2007. Over 300 international law scholars from China and foreign countries are attending the event -- notably Xue Hanqin, judge of the Hague-based International Court of Justice(ICJ), and ICJ President Hisashi Owada. 

The attendees are scheduled to discuss the law of the sea and climate change, among other things. -- NNN-BERNAMA
