ADDIS ABABA (NNN-ENA) -- Ethiopia, endowed with untapped leather resource, can benefit from increased competitiveness in its leather industry through the twining arrangement programme betweeen the Ethiopian Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) and Indian institutes, says Industry State Minister Tadesse Haile.
The sector played significant role in generating foreign currency and creating jobs for Ethiopia, he said here Monday at the launching of the twining arrangement programme for LIDI with India's Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) and Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI).
He called upon the relevant stakeholders to exert their utmost efforts to successfully implement the programme, which is being implemented under an agreement signed by the
LIDI, the Ethiopian Engineering Capacity Building Programme (ECBP), the CLRI and the FDDI.
Education State Minister and ECBP Strategic Director Wondwossen Kiflu said the twining programme would help Ethiopia achieve targets set for the sub-sector under the country's Growth and Transformation Plan.
He said the twinning programme was aimed at enhancing the technological transfer and producing skilled human resources in the leatehr industry sub-sector.
LIDI General Director Wondu Legesse said the programme would help in preparing, equipping and transforming LIDI to enable it to provide competitive support and service to the Ethiopian leather products industry and trade on the basis of international best practices.
Ethiopian Leather Industries Association President Solomon Getu said the programme would help address major problems in the sub-sector. -- NNN-ENA
