New Delhi Freight Train (LP Version)NEW DELHI (NNN-Bernama) -- India will double its infrastructure investments to a staggering US$1 trillion  by 2017 under its 12th five- year plan.

"From a rough figure of five hundred billion dollars in the 11th Five Year Plan, our aim is to raise the level of investment in the infrastructure to about US$1 trillion," Prime Minister Manmohan said at the "Public-Private Partnership in National Highways" conference in Delhi today.

India's road network is almost 3.3 million km and national highways cover over 71,000 km in length.

To supplement existing networks the government plans to build 35,000 km of roads by 2014, with a target of 20 km a day.

Last year, India's Road Transport and Highways Ministry awarded 4,800 km for upgrading works and this year 7,300 km would be awarded under the public-private partnership model.

At least 65 per cent of investments in the road sector are expected to come from private players.

"Good roads are essential element of infrastructure for providing industry and agriculture with the connectivity to markets for growth in production and trade, and more generally for improving the quality of life of citizens," he added.--NNN-BERNAMA
