Powerful quake hits off Alaska

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti)- A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning that was later lifted.

The earthquake struck the island of Atka in the Aleutian archipelago. The quake's epicenter was some 35 kilometers underground.

There have been no reports of victims of damage.

Following the quake, the U.S. tsunami prevention center issued the tsunami warning for several Alaska coastal areas between Unimak Pass and the Aleutian island of Adak, but lifted the warning later in the day as no major waves were registered in the area.

The tsunami is not threat to Russia's Far East, a spokesman for the local emergencies services said.
