NNN- South Africa’s first and oldest mosque, the Auwal Mosque in Cape Town, is more than just a major attraction among Muslim tourists, flocking to this coastal city. The mosque, along with 10 other oldest mosques in all Southern Africa, is a reflection of Cape Town’s rich Islamic history and culture, dating back to 1650s.Cape Town, home to nearly half a million Muslims of diverse Asian origins, is steadily becoming a centre of Islamic tourism. Islam was first introduced to the then Cape of Good hope in 1654 by political exiles and slaves working for the Dutch East India Company that operated between Cape Town, Holland and the then East Indies.
