A computer operator from an impoverished region of eastern India has become the first contestant to win the $1 million top prize on the Indian version of the television quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Sushil Kamar accomplished the feat during a taping of the popular show Tuesday, which is set to air November 2.

He earns $130 a month as a computer operator and tutor, and says he will use some of his winnings to prepare for India's tough civil service exam.

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, who hosts the show, said on his blog that Kamar's win was an “incredible feat” and that the excitement in the studio was “unimaginable.”

Previous contestants have won the show's top prize, but when it was set at a lower amount. ---VOA News
