NEW DELHI (NNN-Xinhua) -- India and Myanmar agreed on Friday to strengthen economic, energy and security cooperation with New Delhi unveiling 500 million U.S. dollar credit for development projects in Myanmar, reported Indo-Asian News Service.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held wide-ranging talks with visiting Myanmar President U. Thein Sein in the Indian capital.

Thein Sein began his maiden visit to India since his election early this year on Wednesday.

The Indian loan, including those for irrigation, are added to nearly 300 million U.S. dollars India had extended earlier for several infrastructure projects, including railway, power transmission lines and oil refinery.

India also announced establishment of an Advanced Center for Agricultural Research and Education (ACARE) in Yezin and a Rice Bio Park and an IT training institute in Mandalay in Myanmar.

"The visit (by U. Thein Sein) represented the first state visit to India following the swearing-in of a new government in Myanmar in March 2011 that marks welcome progress in moving towards an open and democratic framework," said a joint statement isuued after the talks.

The two sides also agreed on "enhancing effective cooperation and coordination between the security forces of the two countries in tackling the deadly menace of insurgency and terrorism", the joint statement said.

"The two leaders reiterated the assurance that the territory of either would not be allowed for activities inimical to the other and resolved not to allow their respective territory to be used for training, sanctuary and other operations by terrorist and insurgent organizations and their operatives," said the joint statement.

Officials of the two countries also discussed bolstering border management mechanisms, stressed their "unequivocal and uncompromising position against terrorism", and decided to bolster institutional mechanisms for sharing of intelligence to combat the menace of insurgency, arms smuggling and drug trafficking.

After the talks, the two sides signed a pact to upgrade the Yangon Children's Hospital and Sittwe General Hospital. Another pact was signed for program of cooperation in science and technology from 2012 to 2015.

The two sides also decided to speed up the construction of India-aided 120 million U.S. dollar Sittwe deep water port to facilitate shipping between India's northeast states and Myanmar, according to the report. -- NNN-Xinhua
