KAMPALA  (NNN-NEW VISION) -- Landlocked Uganda has been cut from Kenya, especially the Kenyan port of Mombasa, after truck drivers went on strike vowing never to resume duty until the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) releases more than 50 Kenyan trucks which they allege have been impounded by the URA for no apparent reason.

The drivers blocked the road within Malaba town Tuesday over claims that Uganda Revenue Authority officers at the Malaba border crossing had impounded some 50 trucks for mistakes committed by their own officers and the clearing agents.

They claim that URA officers and clearing agents at the Malaba Uganda border post were falsifying Customs clearance documents to change the nature of the cargo or make them duty free to fleece the revenue body of millions of shillings in taxes.

They also claim that the drivers whose vehicles have been impounded by URA were made to pay more than 2.0 million Kenyan shillings (about 19,550 USD) in penalties, thus making their lives difficult. They vowed never to resume duties if the status quo remains.

The District Commissioner of Teso, Josephine Onunga, Tuesday convened a meeting with Customs officers from Malaba, Kenya, in a bid to end the impasse. -- NNN-NEW VISION
