SUNGAI PETANI (NNN-Bernama) -- Malaysia is in discussions to secure three major projects in Bangladesh, India and East Africa, which will involve the country's private sector.

Special Ambassador (Infrastructure) Malaysia to India and South Asia, S. Samy Vellu said the projects are of high value, with those in India and Bangladesh being offered by the respective governments.

"We are now discussing with the Bangladesh government on the RM2.6 billion project. The project has been agreed upon by the Bangladesh Prime Minister and also Malaysia's Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak.

"I will be going to Bangladesh in eight day's time to ascertain what is next for the project and also when the agreement can be signed between Malaysia and Bangladesh," he told reporters after officiating the 4th Convocation of the AIMST University at Bedong near here today.

Samy Velu, who is also the Chancellor of AIMST University, however, did not state which sector, the project concerned.

On the project in India, there was a request from the Indian government, for Malaysia to be involved in the about RM3 billion container port project.

"They asked Malaysia to participate in the project. I have discussed and asked a few port companies in Malaysia to consider the project and give me the feedback," he said.

Samy Vellu said apart from this, Malaysia has also been offered a 75 km road project in East Africa. The four-lane project also involves the installation of pipes for the purpose of transporting petrol from the port in Djibouti to Ethiopia. – NNN-BERNAMA
