BANGKOK (NNN-Bernama) -- Red Cross has responded to the current south-east Asia flood by helping more than half a million victims in Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Regional Communication and Advocacy Manager for South-east Asia Matthew Cochrane said volunteers have reached more than 450,000 people in 32 provinces in Thailand.
More than 118,000 family kits, 1.3 million bottles of drinking water have been distributed along with two emergency kitchens which can provide around 4,000 meals per day in Thailand, he said in a statement.
He said three water purification units and two medical teams have also been active in this country.
In Philippines, the Red Cross has reached about 110,000 people with food, 11,000 people, relief items as well as rescued and evacuated 2,600 people affected by Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae in the northern part of the country, he said.
Matthew said Red Cross has released US$15,000 (about RM45,000) in emergency funds to provide initial assistance as well as 1 million water purification tablets and 3,000 household kits for flood victims in Vietnam.
In Cambodia, he said the Red Cross aims to reach about 10,000 families of flood victims with food, shelter, clean water and sanitation.
Red Cross is appealing for international financial assistance, he said. -- NNN-BERNAMA
