CHENNAI (NNN-Bernama) --- The Tirupati temple, dubbed as the world's richest, received a surprise offering on Wednesday when staff discovered 162 diamonds in their daily collection box.
The temple authorities found the diamonds, estimated to be worth nearly RM1million, when they were counting the daily offerings from the "hundi" (donation box).
The unidentified devotee had dropped the diamonds, wrapped in velvet cloth, along with an authenticity certificate, reported the Hindu daily Today.
The offering was made to the temple's Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati, located in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
The temple's executive director L.V. Subramanyam confirmed to the newspaper of the diamond offering but was unable to identify the donor.
Millions of devotees make annual pilgrimage to the sacred, ancient temple, perched on a hill, to pay homage to its main deity, Lord Venkateswara.
The temple's "hundi" collection alone reaches over RM400 million annually.
Devotees are known to donate money, gold and silver to the famous temple. -- NNN-BERNAMA
