SRINAGAR, India (NNN-Bernama) -- At least 11 Indian Army soldiers were killed Thursday and some others were feared trapped as avalanches struck two separate army camps in northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The first avalanche struck the workshop of 109 infantry brigade of Army posted at Dawar in Gurez area of Bandipora district in Kashmir Valley during the intervening night, a defence spokesman said.
Workshop at the rear end of the brigade and soldiers were buried under the thick snow. The rescue and search mission, so far, rescued 15 soldiers and recovered 8 dead bodies.
While, another avalanche struck Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district in the Valley killing three Army soldiers in their camp, the spokesman said.
Authorities had issued medium avalanche warning for both Sonamarg and Gurez areas following fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of the Valley.--NNN-BERNAMA
