ISLAMABAD (NNN-Bernama) -- Pakistani cricket fans were jubilant after country's national team won the Asia Cup by beating Bangladesh on Thursday night in Dhaka, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Thousands of young excited Pakistanis showed their joy on the streets after Pakistan won the thrilling and heart-wrenching competition that went to the last ball of the final match.

Happy cricket fans danced with the thumping beats of traditional drums and there were some occasions of aerial firing and fireworks. They also distributed sweets among each other to celebrate the national victory.

Young guys, riding on their motorbikes and cars with loud national songs, roamed around the capital Islamabad till late night to show their happiness and joy over the title that became theirs after 12 years.

Like in other parts of the country, dozens of large TV screens were installed in Islamabad where thousands of cricket fans congregated to view the play, applauding as their team was moving towards victory.

Pakistani TV channels ran special programmes and transmissions after the national team grabbed the title and showed jubilant fans dancing, shouting in happiness and having parties across the country.

On Friday morning, national daily Urdu newspapers gave special coverage to the triumph, placing its news on the front-pages with super leads.

"Pakistan becomes Asian cricket tiger" and "Pakistan clinches Asian cricket crown" were some of the headlines in various newspapers.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani congratulated the team and nation over the historical victory.

Pakistani cricket team captain Misbah-ul-Haq said the victory is a gift for the nation that is celebrating its national day "Pakistan Day" on March 23.

It was the 12th event of the Asia Cup since its inauguration in 1984 in the United Arab Emirates. -- NNN-BERNAMA
