LIMA (NNN-ANDINA): The alliance between drug trafficking and terrorism will be broken by the State which seeks to pacify the remote valley of the Apurimac and Ene rivers (VRAE), said Peru's Defense Minister Alberto Otarola.
He recalled that President Ollanta Humala Tasso has made the promise of freeing the communities in the Huallaga and VRAE areas from terror, "and we have already accomplished the first part of this commitment with the capture of terrorist leader Artemio".
The terrorist, who led the remnants of the Shining Path in the northeastern region of San Martin, was arrested last month and faces charges of terrorism and drug trafficking that could land him a life sentence.
Otarola said that the project used in the Alto Huallaga area will also be implemented in the VRAE, a wild Amazon area in the country's central jungle, where the subordinates of terrorist leader "Jose" operate in alliance with drug traffickers.
"We are absolutely sure that areas such as the VRAE, after so many years, deserve peace, just like what we recently achieved in the Huallaga," he said.
To that goal, he said the state's presence will be strengthened in the VRAE to achieve concrete results through the promotion and dissemination of social programs such as Beca 18, Pensión 65, among others.
He stressed that the problem of narco-terrorism will not be solved through military action alone but requires a comprehensive approach. -NNN-ANDINA
