BUTTERWORTH, Malaysia (NNN-Bernama) -- Deputy Health Minister Rosnah Abdul Rashid Sirlin estimates some two million people in the country are at risk of contracting diabetes but were unaware of this as they did not have health screening done.

She said the estimate, made by the ministry, was for adults who have not had regular periodic health screening.

"The National Health Morbidity and Survey (NHMS) found diabetes patients are increasing each year. In 2006, 1.5 million Malaysians were found having diabetes and the initial results of the NHMS in 2011 found three million people in the country have diabetes," she said when opening a diabetes awareness campaign here today.

She said the spike in diabetes cases had made Malaysia to be ranked among the highest in Asia and the world with the problem.

Rosnah, who is also the Umno Puteri chief, said the ministry hoped all those who were 20 years and above would undergo health screening for non-contagious diseases each year.

"Health examination should cover blood pressure, sugar level and blood cholestrol, Body Mass Index and waist measurement to ensure we are in good health and enable early disease prevention," she said. -- NNN-BERNAMA
