NEW DELHI, India (NNN-UNI) -- Lok Sabha (Lower House) Sunday met for a special session on the 60th anniversary of its first assembly on this day in 1952, with Speaker Meira Kumar saluting the spirit of millions of the poor, workers, farmers and other faceless people of this country who have kept the portals of democracy alive by their participation.
She also made an impassioned call to the Members to work for creation of a casteless society, saying "casteism and democracy cannot go together."
As the House sat for the session after the national anthem, Ms Kumar saluted the national consciousness of the citizens of this country, which has kept democracy alive.
The Speaker also sought to underline that the fruits of development have to reach to the last of the poor to make this democracy meaningful. --NNN-UNI
