BEIJING (NNN-XINHUA) - The Olympic flame for this summer's London Games was lit May 10, 2012 in Ancient Olympia, Greece.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee said the flame was lit "with every solemnity, according to the traditional way".
High Priestess, Ino Menegaki, lit the flame directly from the sun’s rays. It was handed over to the first torchbearer, Greek world champion swimmer, Spyros Gianniotis.
An eight-day torch relay covering 2,900 kilometres around Greece will follow.
Ceremonies will be held at the site where the first Olympics were held some 2,800 years ago.
The lighting ceremony was broadcast live over the Internet for the first time ever. --NNN-XINHUA
