NEW DELHI, India (NNN-Bernama) - The pursuit of research and higher studies is gaining popularity among Indians as an increasing number of students are enrolling for doctorate programmes, Press Trust of India reported.
"The number of students pursuing research (MPhil and PhD combined) over the last three years is increasing," Minister of state in Human Resource Development
Ministry D Purandeswari said on Friday.
The University Grants Commission reported that 95,872 students were pursuing research in 2008-09, with the number increasing to 117,999 in 2009-10 and 137,668 in 2010-11, Purandeswari said.
A study commissioned by the Ministry of Human Resource Development estimated that the number of children aged 6 to 13 who did not attend school has decreased from 13.5 million in 2005 to 8.2 million. -- NNN-BERNAMA
