NEW DELHI (NNN-Bernama): Seeking support of corporates and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for the Clean India campaign, Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai on Tuesday launched the pilot project at Qutab Minar aimed at improving the conditions at heritage sites to attract more tourists.
"There will be about 100 monuments to be taken up in the private public partnership (PPP) model under the Clean India campaign to keep these tourist sites neat and clean and environment friendly," Sahai said after launching the project.
Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the projects involve round the clock garbage clearance, drinking water facilities, maintenance of parking lots and toilets and proper signages at the heritage complex among others.
"The campaign will be carried out in the PPP model with the involvement of PSUs and corporates. I am convening a meeting of PSUs and corporates to work out the details," he said.
India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the PSU under the ministry, is entrusted with the pilot project at Qutab Minar.
"Currently there are about six million foreign tourists coming to the country and our aim is to increase it to 12 million," he said adding "for this we have to provide a hygienic environment in around tourist destinations across the country."
Radio jingles and posters were also released on the occasion.
There is also plan to carry the campaign message on train tickets, Sahai said.
Clean India campaign has been initiated by the ministry with the objective to increase tourist arrivals to the country and to improve quality of services and provide a hygienic environment in and around tourist destinations across the country in sync with the 12th Five Year Plan of the Centre, said a senior Tourism Ministry official.
The campaign is a multi-pronged action and comprehensive strategy to ensure an acceptable level of cleanliness and hygiene practices at tourist destinations for an inclusive and sustainable development of tourism through ownership and involvement of private and public sector stakeholders.
The project will also address issues like conversion of Qutab Minar complex into friendly zone for physically challenged persons, tourist help desks and deployment of volunteers for better management. -NNN-BERNAMA
