The latest tragedy occurred in the Burdwan Medical College Hospital (BMCH), located in Burdwan town in the eastern state.
The latest cases emerged just hours after 17 babies died within a span of 70 hours at the BC Roy Post-Graduate Institute of Paediatric Science, also in Kolkata.
"We don't have a neo-natal care unit. We have a space problem in the paediatric ward, which leads to overcrowding.
"But there is no shortage of doctors," said BMCH deputy superintendent Tapas Kumar Ghosh, as reported by the Kolkata-based Telegraph daily.
Most babies which died in BMCH were only a day-old, with doctors saying they were mostly underweight and admitted to the hospital in serious condition.
"These children weighed between 750gm and 1.4kg. Normal weight has to be at least two kilogrammes.
"Six of them were suffering from lack of oxygen in the brain. Some also had jaundice," added Ghosh.
But, both the government hospitals had maintained there was no medical negligence on their part.
The Telegraph reported that paediatric wards were overcrowded with patients -- 150 babies shared 60 beds and 36 children were warded at a 20-bed nursery. -- NNN-BERNAMA
