NAGAPATTINAM, Tamil Nadu state, India Nov 25 (NNN-Bernama) -- A group of final year mechanical engineering students of PRIST University in Thanjavur have designed low-cost 'nano' motorcycles, which could give a mileage of 97 kilometres per litre of petrol.
The 'nano' motorcycles is expected to hit the roads in India , will be sold at about Rs 8,000 (RM490) per unit, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, citing the students.
In 2008, Indian automaker Tata Motors has unveiled the Tata Nano — its already legendary US$2,500 car, a four door, five seat hatch, powered by a 30 HP Bosch 624 cc four stroke engine mounted out back and mated to a CVT.
The students of a private university, with the technical support of Hi-Tech Project Industries, a private engineering services company at Porayar, designed this 25 kilogramme, single-seater nano motorcycle.
Demonstrating the new model here recently, the students have claimed that the vehicle can touch a maximum speed of 45 kmph and carry one person.
They have fabricated the bike using steel, aluminium alloy and plastic, and
the main frame is made of steel while the wheels were made of aluminium alloy.
"The petrol tank is made of plastic. To reduce noise, belt drive has been used instead of the traditional chain drive mechanism," PTI quoted them as saying.
The students also claimed that commercial production of the motorcycle was viable and would cost only about Rs 8,000 per unit. -- NNN-BERNAMA
