WASHINGTON (NNN-KUNA) - The total number of mosques increased at a "tremendous rate" across the United States in the past decade, a report showed yesterday.

A report issued by the US Mosque Survey 2011 indicated that the number of mosques and mosque participants continued to show "significant" growth.

The US Mosque Survey 2011 counted a total of 2,106 mosques compared to 1, 209 in the year 2000, which is a 74 percent increase from 2000.

The report showed that Muslims who attended Eid Prayers also increased from about two million in 2000 to about 2.6 million last year.

According to the report, the vast majority of mosques are located in metropolitan areas but the percentage of mosques in urban areas is decreasing while the percentage of mosques in suburban areas is increasing.

In 2000, 16 percent of mosques were located in suburbs compared to 28 percent in 2011.

"Over 98 percent of mosque leaders agree that Muslims should be involved in American institutions; and 91 percent agree that Muslims should be involved in politics," the report said.

It added that "the vast majority of mosque leaders do not feel that overall American society is hostile to Islam," where only 25 percent of mosque leaders last year believe that American society is hostile to Islam, compared to 54 percent in the year 2000.

The Survey said that the emergence of new mosques can be attributed to a number of factors, such as "the increased number of Muslim refugees and new immigrant groups has led them to establish their own mosques where they can feel more comfortable in their own language and cultural environment. --NNN-KUNA
