THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India (NNN-Bernama) -- Researchers at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in south Indian state Kerala have developed software that will help in accurate detection of breast cancer, Press Trust of India reported.

The automated software-based test will help the doctors analyse mammograms and detect micro-calcifications, the early indicators of breast cancer, with more perfection.

This will replace the existing manual method to detect the ailment.

CUSAT researchers claimed that the software can ensure a classification accuracy of 98 per cent and detection accuracy of 91.25 per cent.

The new research is also likely to bring down the input costs for majority of the health institutions, which could not afford the equipments, said Suma Mariam Jacob, a radiologist at a hospital in Kochi.

Only the state-run Regional Cancre Centre here has the fully digital mammography unit with computer-aided software detection for breast cancer.

Although agreeing that the development of the software would be a boon for breast cancer patients, Jacob said it should be brought through clinical trials before being put into usage. -- NNN-BERNAMA
